(Walking towards south of the dawn)
Sax-Investigations #01 is a project in progress for a new video-installation that will be created in July 2007 in the marble caves of the Alpi Apuane. The idea of shooting a new video dedicated to the marble caves of the Alpi Apuane came from different on-the–spot investigations made during the years and more precisely from the last visit to Monte Altissimo [the Most High Mount but also Mount of God on High] in the summer of 2006. I’ve always imagined a kind of contemporary journey to the centre of the earth, in the depths of the marble walls dug in the mountain, where the porosity of its rock face becomes smooth, minimal, creating real rooms-sepulchres. The natural-artificial heart of the mountain. And then, here, the imaginary (or real?) figure of a lonesome contemporary traveller comes along with me through these places, dressed in an evening suit and accompanied by a musical instrument (a sax?).At the beginning we see him from a distance climbing the mountain (of God on High?), then outside the caves, partly abandoned, partly still opened on the northeast front, where the mountain finishes in an absence (the mountain eaten by man); in the end (or it’s the beginning?) inside it.A sound comes along with us in the inside, the sound of a saxophone that lights up showing with its strong-feeble light the smooth and most high walls of the marble rooms. It seems the traveller is searching for an ideal space where to start his concert while waiting for an audience that will never come: will he improvise from above a great block of marble just cut out, or on top of a rusty loading machine? Will he disappear inside the mountain taking away his sound and light or will he return outside leaving behind himself the dark of the mountain and its iron heart? Again, in this case, I continue a research on the places manipulated by man, on the constant transformation of the morphology of natural spaces that become landscape, real or imaginary… Music will take us in a new psycho-geography of places, in a non-stop bounce between natural and artificial. A passage from light to dark, from inside to outside…
